Plot

Template:Expand Catherine (Julianne Moore) and David Stewart (Liam Neeson) are a professional married couple who have a 17-year-old son, Michael (Max Thieriot), and live in Toronto, Ontario. To an outsider, they have everything, but in reality, both their careers and raising a troubled teen have put strains on their marriage and all forms of communication have been lost. When David misses a flight home from New York and, as a result, a surprise party that Catherine has planned for him, her suspicions are raised when he can't give her a legitimate excuse. Then, after reading a text message from one of David's students, Catherine is immediately convinced that her husband is having an affair.

After a chance encounter with a young escort named Chloe (Amanda Seyfried) in a hotel bathroom, Catherine begins to concoct a plan in her mind. After she catches David in another lie, Catherine is more convinced than ever about her husband's infidelity and hires Chloe to "test" her husband and report back to her with the sordid details. Meeting regularly with Chloe, Catherine absorbs the explicit stories Chloe shares of her encounters with David, igniting Catherine's jealousy and awakening long-dormant sensations. Catherine soon finds herself caught in a web of sexual desire, placing her family in great risk.
