He was born in Urbana, Illinois, but moved to Winfield Park, New Jersey at age 3, and then to Westfield, NJ at age 13. Dan's early childhood experience of New Jersey informed some of his early minimal art pieces. Dan and Robert Smithson photographed New Jersey together during the mid to late sixties.
