Jean le Rond d'Alembert (November 16, 1717 – October 29, 1783) was a French mathematician, mechanician, physicist and philosopher. He was also co-editor with Denis Diderot of the Encyclopédie. Both the Encyclopédie and the Mélanges de littérature, d'histoire et de philosophie, nouvelle édition, augmentée de plusieurs notes sur la traduction de quelques morceaux de Tacite were placed on the The Index.
