In 1638, thirty years before the publication of his magnum opus An Essay towards a Real Character and a Philosophical Language, and his ordination as Bishop of Chester, the twenty-four year-old John Wilkins wrote a brief, speculative volume entitled The Discovery of a World in the Moone, or, a Discourse Tending to Prove, that ’tis probable there may be another habitable World in that Planet.
