Pornosophy is a portmanteau word of porn (pornography) and sophia (wisdom) that hints at the connection between pornography and philosophy. A related term is erosophy.
The term was perhaps first mentioned in print in 1922 in James Joyce's novel Ulysses as "Pornosophical philotheology. Metaphysics in Mecklenburg street!"[1], a phrase uttered by Lynch. See philotheology and Mecklenburg street.
The American magazine Evergreen Review in 1960, in volume 4, issues 13-15, has a chapter entitled "Erotics and pornosophy."
It is also found in such titles as Stefan Zweifel's Pornosophie & Imachination - Sade/Lamettrie/Hegel (2002).
