It is well worth noting that while Restif abhorred Sade, Sade equally detested Restif; for example, the marquis wrote to his wife in 1783, when he was incarcerated at the prison of Vincennes

Le marquis de Sade et Restif, dont les points de vue sont quasi opposés, se détestaient ; le premier a dit du second qu’il dormait avec une presse au pied de son lit tandis que Restif a traité Sade de « monstre », terme qu’il affectionne particulièrement et qu’on retrouve fréquemment sous sa plume.
