The Vietnam War was fought from 1957 to 1975 between communist forces and an array of Western and pro-Western forces, most importantly the United States. It sought to decide whether Vietnam should be unified under communist control or remain partitioned into North and South, in accordance with an agreement reached at Geneva in 1954. It ended with a communist victory and the unification of the country in 1975. --
