Echoed by novelist Ken Kesey in Tom Wolfe’s 1968 book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and again by Peter Fonda’s character “Captain America” in the 1969 film Easy Rider, “we blew it” sums up the ultimate failure of the counterculture’s utopian dreams of Freedom, Broadened Perceptions, and Unity as their idealism succumbed to mainstream corruption.
