Edme-François Mallet wrote the Noah's Ark article in L'Encyclopédie. In its absurd quest for correctness, Mallet calculated the size of the stables and the quantity of dung produced, after which it became difficult to take the Bible seriously as a work of history. (Source Philipp Blom)
- L’évêque Wilkins calcule tous les animaux carnaciers équivalens tant par rapport à leur volume, que par rapport à leur nourriture, à 27 loups, & tous les autres à 208 bœufs. Pour l’équivalant de la nourriture des premiers, il met celle 1825 brebis, & pour celle des seconds 109500 coudées de foin : or les deux premiers étages étoient plus que suffisans pour contenir ces choses. Quant au troisieme étage, il n’y a point de difficulté ; tout le monde convient qu’il y avoit plus de place qu’il n’en falloit pour les oiseaux, pour Noé & pour sa famille.[1]
