Austria has had an active cinema industry since the early 20th century. Fritz Lang, Billy Wilder, Fred Zinnemann, Otto Preminger and Michael Haneke are among the most important Austrian directors, although many of their most celebrated films were made outside Austria. Austrian actors who have achieved international success include Klaus Maria Brandauer, Maximilian Schell, Romy Schneider, Peter Lorre, Oskar Werner, Curd Jürgens and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
