Monday in Firenze: everything closed, we visited the Pietre dure museum, the botanical garden and the botanical park. We saw the Sea monsters fountains (Florence).

Tuesday: surreal Pisa and San Gimignano

Wednesday: back to Firenze

Visited Boboli gardens: what a foul stinking smell!

Visited La Specola.

Visited Uffizi (saw Frans van Mieris the Elder The Drunken Youth).

Bought Grotesques: The Painted Ceilings at the Uffizi by Cristina Acidini Luchinat.

Two days at Lago di Suviana

Look at that Batman church, I said to my children in Colmar, spotting the copper rooftop of the belltower of the St Martin's Church, Colmar, a decidedly steampunk detail of Colmar and one that makes the link with the inspiration for Howl's Moving Castle most obvious.

I read: Karakter and Zelfportret of het galgenmaal. I unsuccessfully tried to read The Name of the Rose. During the previous summer I had enjoyed Foucault's Pendulum.
