Beanus is a German university initiation ritual/rite of passage described in the Themata Medica, de Beanorum, Archibeanorum, Beanulorum et Cornutorum quorumque affectibus et curatione (c. 1650,[1], English: Medical Topics on the Affects and Cure of Yellow-beaks, Arch-yellow-beaks, and Horn-wearers Severally), a mock medical treatise on "beanismus" which is included in the Nugae Venales sive Thesaurus Ridendi et Jocandi - a compendium of scatological and obscene jokes.

The treatise also gives all sorts of fantastical cures, since the conventional gargling with a decoction of "album graecum" is said to be insufficient in the case of beanismus (album graecum, i.e. white dog shit, was actually in common use in medicine up until the eighteenth century, as a remedy for sore throats and other ailments). (Alistair Ian Blyth, 2014)
