Behaving Badly: The Secret Life of the Portrait fantaisiste du Marquis de Sade (2013) is a text by Jann Marson.

Abstract:

"This article examines the nineteenth-century contexts from which the posthumous portrait of the Marquis de Sade—dubbed the Portrait fantaisiste by Guillaume Apollinaire—emerged to reveal a network of bibliophiles, bibliographers, publishers, and engravers more preoccupied with their own roles in producing, disseminating, and collecting Sade artifacts than they were with defining Sade’s “true” identity. Situating the Portrait fantaisiste within this milieu, we find that the print served to tell its viewers little about Sade but rather a great deal about the earliest groups responsible for championing the positive reception and popularization of Sade’s oeuvre during the 1830s and 1860s."
