"Conservatism, which is for politics what classicism is for literature, is in turn the political secularization of the doctrine of original sin. In contrast, radicalism is Rousseau's β€œnatural goodness of man” collectivized into a touching political faith in β€œthe masses.” Nazi radicalism equates Rousseau's Noble Savage with the radical mass (the Volk); Marxist radicalism equates him with the economic mass (the proletariat)."--Conservatism Revisited: The Revolt Against Ideology (1949) by Peter Viereck
