From The Art and Popular Culture Encyclopedia
"From Underground Moderne to Nova Classics, from Loft classics bootlegs and BBE Records to Strut Records and Soul Jazz, the period from 1990 to 2010 was the golden age of the cd compilation and connoisseur liner notes."--Sholem Stein "Claremont 56's Originals compilations [are] ten CD-only compilations, limited to 1,000 copies a pop of the rarest funk, disco, Italo, Kraut and boogie as chosen by ten of the world’s most prolific and clandestine record collectors."[1] |

A compilation album is an album of music featuring tracks from one or multiple recording artists, often culled from a variety of sources. The tracks are usually collected according to a common characteristic, such as popularity, source or subject matter. When the tracks are all essentially by the same recording artist, a compilation album is often referred to as a retrospective album.
In the area of black music, one of the first compilations was Rare Grooves Vol. 1 (1988) on StreetSounds.
