Denmark Vesey (also Telemaque) (Template:Circa1767 Template:Mdash July 2, 1822) was a literate, skilled carpenter and leader among African Americans in Charleston, South Carolina. He was accused and convicted of being the leader of "the rising," a major potential slave revolt planned for the city in June 1822. He was executed shortly thereafter.
