La Editorial Sudamericana fue fundada en el año 1939 por un grupo de editores argentinos y españoles que estaban radicados en Buenos Aires: Victoria Ocampo, Carlos Mayer, Oliverio Girondo, Alfredo González Garaño y Rafael Vehils.
El catalán Antoni López Llausàs fue el primer gerente y estuvo a cargo de la editorial hasta el año de su fallecimiento: 1979.
Hoy es un sello de Random House Mondadori.
