Created in 1967, the Stockholm Big Electric Chair is part of a series of works by Andy Warhol depicting an electric chair. Death by electrocution was a controversial subject in New York, where the artist lived and worked, especially after the last two executions at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in 1963. Warhol obtained a photograph of the empty execution chamber, which became the basis for this series.
The image of the chair - the electric chair at Sing Sing prison, New York - was repeated as multiple images in the first series. In 1967, in preparation for his retrospective at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, the following year, Warhol, re-used the image for a series of fourteen paintings in different colour combinations. Here only a single image of the chair is used.
