The "erotic frigidaire" is a catch phrase coined by art critic Thomas Hess to describe the sculptures of Antonio Canova. Art News editor Hess supplied the title to Mario Praz's article on Canova, retitling it "Canova or the Erotic Frigidaire" (Art News, 16 (Nov.), 1957).

In his book Gusto neoclássico, Praz mentions that Hess retitled the article whithout his consent (la descrizione dell'opera di Canova come erotic frigidaire, citata da Honour, fu preposta a un mio articolo, senza il mio consenso, dal direttore di Art News, Thomas B. Hess).
