A father figure is usually an older man, often one in a position of power or influence, who arouses emotions usually felt for a person's father, and with whom a person identifies psychologically. Several studies have suggested that positive father figures, whether biological fathers or others, are generally associated with healthy child development.

The term can also refer to an adult male who may be recognized as the authoritative senior of another (usually younger) person; for example, a clergyman.
