"La France n'est point une race comme l'Allemagne ; c'est une nation" (English: "France is not a race, like Germany; it is a nation") is a dictum by Jules Michelet recorded in Introduction à l'histoire universelle (1831).
Context:
- "La France n'est point une race comme l'Allemagne ; c'est une nation. Son origine est le mélange, l'action est sa vie. Tout occupée du présent, du réel, son caractère est vulgaire, prosaïque. L'individu tire sa gloire de sa participation volontaire à l'ensemble ; il peut dire, lui aussi : Je m'appelle légion. Chercherez-vous là la personnalité superbe de l'Anglais, ou le calme, la pureté, le chaste recueillement de l'Allemagne? Demandez donc aussi le gazon de ai à la l'oute poudreuse où la foule a passé tout le jour."
This dictum is reminiscent of another dictum by Michelet: "England is an Empire, Germany a race; France is a person." Michelet, Jules (1861). Histoire de France. Chamerot. p. 103, book 3.
