The term German legend usually refers to literary fiction of the Middle High German period, which is interconnected both with prehistoric Continental Germanic mythology and with modern German folklore.

The cycle of German legend is grouped around the legends about Theodoric the Great, which attracted also material unrelated in origin, such as the Nibelungen material.

German legend was collected in Heldenbuch literature during the 16th century.
