In Late Antiquity, Hermetism (van den Broek and Hanegraaff (1997) distinguish Hermetism for the tradition of Late Antiquity from Hermeticism for the Renaissance revival.) emerged in parallel with Gnosticism, Neoplatonism and early Christianity, "characterized by a resistance to the dominance of either pure rationality or doctrinal faith".
