Biography

Born at the Reggia di Portici (Palace of Portici) in Italy. He was baptised Filippo Antonio Gennaro Pasquale Francesco de Paula of Naples and Sicily. He was the Duke of Calabria and eldest son of Charles III of Spain. As the heir apparent to his father, he was given the ducal title of Calabria; the style was the traditional title of the heir apparent of the Kingdom of Naples. He was excluded from succession to the throne due to his imbecility. His younger brothers were Charles IV of Spain and Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies. His only sister to survive infancy was Maria Luisa, the future Holy Roman Empress as wife of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor.

In 1759 his half-uncle Ferdinand VI of Spain (whom he never met) died and the crown of the Kingdom of Spain was inherited by Philip's father Charles III. Charles succeeded as Charles III and Philip was to remain in Naples out of sight from the Neapolitan court's at the Palace's of Capodimonte and the newly constructed Palace of Caserta.

He died at the Palace of Portici in Naples at the age of 30 of smallpox. He was buried at the Complex of the Church of Santa Chiara in Naples.
