Jacques Mesrine (December 28, 1936 - November 2, 1979) was a French criminal who was also briefly active in the United States and Canada.

The story of French criminal Jacques Mesrine has been filmed at least twice.

The first was by André Génovès.

The second project was in 2008.

Jacques Mesrine's 1977 autobiographical book "L'Instinct de mort" has been adapted on screen and directed by Jean-François Richet, featuring Vincent Cassel as Mesrine, costarring Gérard Depardieu, Mathieu Amalric and Cécile de France. The movie is being released in two parts, the first "L'instinct de mort" (Killer Instinct, english title Public Enemy Number One (Part 1)) was released in France on October 22nd 2008 and the second part "L'Ennemi public n°1" ("Public Enemy Number One (Part 2)") was released in French theaters on November 19th 2008.

Additionally, the 1980 police comedy film Inspecteur la Bavure with Coluche and Gérard Depardieu has Depardieu's character, Morzini, directly inspired by Mesrine.
