Jerry Lewis
From The Art and Popular Culture Encyclopedia
"Jerry Lewis's character, more involuted than infantile, is such that everything resonates in his head and soul; but, conversely, his smallest sketched or inhibited gestures, and the inarticulate sounds he comes out with, in turn resonate, because they set off a movement of world which goes as far as catastrophe (the destruction of the set at the music professor's in The Patsy), or which travels from one world to another, in a pulverizing of colours, a metamorphosis of forms and a mutation of sounds (The Nutty Professor)." --Cinema II: The Time-Image, Gilles Deleuze |

Jerry Lewis (born Joseph or Jerome Levitch, depending on the source; March 16, 1926 – August 20, 2017) was an American actor, comedian, singer, film producer, film director, screenwriter, and humanitarian. He was known for his slapstick humor. French film critics of the 1960s were infatuated with his work. The reason for this infatuation was explained in the book Why the French Love Jerry Lewis.
