Judge Frederick van Pelt Bryan (1904 - 1978) ruled that Lady Chatterley's Lover was not obscene. His 30-page decision in Roth v. the United States says not only that the book is not obscene but also that the postmaster general is neither qualified nor authorized to judge the obscenity of material to be sent through the mails; he is empowered only to halt delivery of matter already judged obscene.
