Katherine Mary Dunham (22 June 1909 – 21 May 2006) was an African-American dancer, choreographer, songwriter and author who was trained as an anthropologist. She introduced U.S. and European audiences to Caribbean- and African-based dance music. In 1941 Maya Deren became her personal secretary. Alton Miller was at one time became a conga drumming accompanist for a local Katherine Dunham based dance company.
