The Lafayette Afro Rock Band was an American musical ensemble known for compositions such as "Darkest Light" (1974).

Overview
The group was formed in Long Island, NY as the Bobby Boyd Congress but relocated to France in 1971 where they became the house session band at producer Pierre Jaubert's Parisound studio. For a while, Jaubert changed the group's name to the Lafayette Afro Rock Band.
In 1974 they released their first album Soul Makossa (issued in the U.S. as Movin' & Groovin), highlighted by the oft-covered and much-sampled 'Hihache'. The second album, "Malik", featured the composition "Darkest Light", its desolate saxophone intro later sampled for use by Public Enemy for track "Show 'Em Whatcha Got".
Their music has become an endless source of samples and breaks for everyone from Wreckx'N'Effect to Janet Jackson.
Strut Records has a Lafayette compilation called Darkest Light: The Best Of The Lafayette Afro Rock Band. They are also featured in Funk By Dave Thompson.

Prácticamente desconocidos en su momento, Lafayette Afro Rock Band ha sido rescatado gracias al uso de sus canciones como base para composiciones hip-hop, con artistas como Public Enemy, Janet Jackson o Tuff Crew. Esto, unido a la reedición de sus dos discos publicados bajo el nombre de Lafayette Afro Rock Band ha contribuido a crear un pequeña pero fiel grupo de admiradores. No obstante, el resto de trabajos de este grupo de músicos bajo otros nombres (Ice, Crispy and Co.) son aún hoy día extraordinariamente poco conocidos.
