"Life is too important to be taken seriously" is a dictum attributed to epigramist, poet, and playwright Oscar Wilde. It is recorded in two of his plays: in Vera; or, The Nihilists as "Ah! my dear Count, life is much too important a thing ever to talk seriously about it." and in Lady Windermere's Fan (1892) as “Because I think that life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about it.”
