This is a list of fictional apes. This list is restricted to notable non-human ape characters from the world of fiction including bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, gibbons, and other higher primates.

- Marco, from the Animorphs book series. Marco, shapeshifts into the form of a gorilla as his main 'battle morph'.
- Arthur the chimpanzee, a children's book character created by Lillian Hoban.
- Curious George (the books call him a monkey, not an ape, but the pictures are somewhat ape-like.)
- Fiben Bolger, in David Brin's The Uplift War, a science-fiction novel by David Brin in which gorillas transported to the planet Garth for experiments in uplift play a significant role in the plot.
- Ishmael, a gorilla philosopher in Daniel Quinn's Ishmael and My Ishmael.
- The Librarian of the Unseen University, an orangutan in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.
- Mangani, the fictional species of apes that raised Tarzan.
- Shift the Ape, the main antagonist of The Last Battle, the seventh book in C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia.

- Detective Chimp, a superintelligent ape that first appeared in the silver age of DC. Has recently returned in the Infinite Crisis mini-series Day of Vengeance. - McGimben 'Mac' Gimbensky is a protagonist in Tim Eldred's Grease Monkey.
- Mikhlo one of The Super-Apes, agents of the Communist villain The Red Ghost in Fantastic Four
- Monsieur Mallah - An intelligent gorilla created by an evil brain in a jar. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Evil, enemies of the original Doom Patrol.
- Nnamdi, Solovar's son and successor.
- Sky Ape, a millionaire gorilla with a jetpack, written by Philip D. Amara & Tim McCarney.
- Solovar - A heroic counterpart to Grodd, later the leader of Gorilla City.
- Titano the Super-Ape - A Superman villain
- Ultra-Humanite - A mad scientist who took many forms, most famously that of an evil albino ape. While he first appeared in the Golden Age, his gorilla form first appeared in the Silver Age.

- King Gorilla, super-villain and "scared straight" counselor from The Venture Bros.
- Mr. Teeny, a minor recurring chimpanzee on The Simpsons. He's Krusty the Clown's acting partner and possibly pet, and like Krusty is addicted to cigarettes.
- Mojo Jojo - The Powerpuff Girls, a chimpanzee with megalomania
- Mr. Nesmith the chimpanzee, a main character in the Nickelodeon animated series Planet Sheen. In the service of NASA, originally an normal ape, but when his rocket crashed on an alien planet he developed advanced intelligence and the ability to speak, due to the higher gravity. Sheen Estevez, the star of the show, often incorrectly refers to him as a Monkey, much to Nesmith's annoyance.
- Windsor Gorilla, a wise gorilla and another friend of Adam Lyon in My Gym Partner's a Monkey.
- Optimus Primal, leader of the Maximals in Beast Wars, a transformers spin-off
- Bobo Haha the talking Chimp and Rex's friend from Generator Rex.

- Andross, the main antagonist of the Star Fox series and his nephew, Andrew Oikonny, along with most of Andross's henchmen from Star Fox: Assault
- Donkey Kong, a popular video game character; also, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Swanky Kong, Lanky Kong, Kiddy Kong, Cranky Kong, Candy Kong, and Funky Kong from the Donkey Kong Country video game series for SNES and in Donkey Kong 64 for Nintendo 64, and also Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong's son which appeared in the game of the same name for Arcade and various game systems.
- Gorilla, from Gekido
- Specter, the main antagonist of the Ape Escape series. He rules over lesser apes known as Piposaru.
- The Cosmic SilverbackTemplate:Verify source, a zombified gorilla that appears in Call of Duty Black Ops in the Zombies map Dead ops Arcade. It is fought at the end of Dead ops Arcade and wears a spacesuit.
