M is a 1951 remake of Fritz Lang's film of the same name, shifting the action from Berlin to Los Angeles. The remake, directed by Joseph Losey with David Wayne playing Peter Lorre's role, was not well received by critics or audiences and was by the condemned by the Legion of Decency.

Most of the film was shot on location in the now demolished Los Angeles slum neighborhood of Bunker Hill.
