Mate desertion is when one or both parents stop protecting their offspring before those young are fully independent. One mate abandons the other and the departed parent often seeks out another mate. The behavior is most prominent in insects, birds and mammals. In general, males most often exercise this behavior, but both males and females practice mate desertion.
