"Merdre" (English: "Shittr") is the incipit of Ubu Roi, a play by Alfred Jarry. It is a neologism based on the word merde (shit), featuring an extra 'r'.

Exclamation mark

Often rendered today followed by an exclamation mark, the exclamation mark is absent in the 1896 edition [1], the 1897 Mercure de France edition of Ubu Roi and the La Revue Blanche edition of 1900[2].

Translations

English

"Merdre!" has been translated into English as "Pshit!", "Shitteth!", "Shittr!", "Shikt!", "Shrit!", "Pschitt!", and "Shitsky!".

Dutch

Dutch translator Dolf Verspoor rendered it in 1965 as 'potverproep', Cornelis Jan Kelk had given 'verrek' in 1922, Du Perron corrected that with the trouvaille 'verdrek'.

There was also 'kakadju' by Pjeroo Roobjee.
