John Michael Stipe (born 1960) is an American singer-songwriter, best known as the lead singer and lyricist of rock band R.E.M.. He sang on "Alive and Living Now" and three songs on Visions of Excess (1985), all on the Golden Palominos.

Stipe also covered "L'hôtel particulier" under the name "L'Hotel" on a 2006 Gainsbourg tribute album, Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited.
