In 2000, MoMA dedicating a cycle of exhibitions to modern art. For that purpose they divided the history of modern art into three forty-year segments:
- "Modern Starts" (1880 to 1920)
- "Making Choices" (1920 to 1960)
- "Open Ends" (from 1960 to the present)
