The relative lack of Muslim Nobel laureates in sciences in comparison to their population has been attributed to more insular modern interpretations of Islam, in comparison to how in the Middle Ages it was open to foreign ideas.
Abdus Salam, who won a Nobel Prize in Physics for his electroweak theory, is among those who argue that the quest for reflecting upon and studying nature is a duty upon Muslims.
