"Phallustrade" is a neologism by Max Ernst, a contraction of "autostrade", "balustrade" and "phallus." It was coined in "Au-dela de la peinture," a text first published in Cahiers d'Art in 1936.
- "Une phallustrade est un collage verbal. on pourrait définir le collage comme un composé alchimique de deux ou plusieurs éléments hétérogènes, résultant de leur rapprochement inattendu, dû, soit à une volonté tendue - par amour de la clairvoyance - vers la confusion systématique et le dérèglement de tous les sens (Rimbaud), soit au hasard, ou à une volonté favorisant le hasard."
