In Greek mythology, Phobetor ("frightening") was one of the sons of Hypnos, the god of sleep, and Pasithea, youngest of the three Graces. As one of the Oneiroi, Phobetor was the personification of nightmares and appeared in dreams in the form of animals or monsters. Among the gods he was known by his true name, Icelus (Ikelos "semblance").

Phobetor lived along with his brothers, Morpheus and Phantasos, in Morpheus' dream world, and created nightmares and fears for the mortals on Earth. He created for Morpheus the two monsters that guard the dream world that will turn into your fears to keep the dream world safe from others apart from other gods.
