Pornology is a neologism coined by French philosopher Gilles Deleuze as pornologie. The term appeared in 1967 in Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty, his analysis of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's novel Venus in Furs.

- "However, the work of Sade and Masoch cannot be regarded as pornography; it merits the more exalted title of "pornology" because its erotic language cannot be reduced to the elementary functions of ordering and describing."
