Modern design was noted for its austerity, its straight lines, its 'less is more' and 'ornament is crime' aesthetic. Postmodern design broke with that.

Postmodern design, intersecting the Pop art movement, gained steam in the 1960s and 70s, promoted in the 80s by groups such as the Italy-based Memphis Group. Transitional furniture is intended to fill a place between Traditional and Modern tastes.
