The roughie was an American explotation filmgenre. Roughies supplanted the "nudie cuties " and commonly featured male violence against women, including kidnapping, rape and murder. Scum of the Earth!, a 1963 film by David Friedman and Herschell Gordon Lewis.
Lorna (1964) is Russ Meyer's contribution to the genre.
Other filmmakers working in the genre were Joseph Mawra.
In Europe, actresses like Karin Schubert and Alice Arno were active in this type of films, while Spanish director Jesus Franco proved himself the master of the genre.
