-Description: The design is rather close to the actual altarpiece. It shows Bernard of Clairvaux receiving milk from the breast of the Virgin Mary. The scene is a legend from the life of St. Bernard which allegedly took place in the Cathedral of Speyer in 1146. The putti in the front corner are playing with a beehive, alluding to the eloquence of St. Bernard, who was called »doctor mellifluus« (Scholar whose words flow sweet as honey). In front of the actual altarpiece, there is a small putto statue with a beehive corresponding to the painting.+The Speyer Cathedral, officially the Imperial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St Stephen, in Latin: Domus sanctae Mariae Spirae (German: Dom zu Unserer lieben Frau in Speyer) in Speyer, Germany, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Speyer and is suffragan to the Archdiocese of Bamberg.
