The saying "truth is stranger than fiction" originates from cantos 14 of Don Juan: "'Tis strange — but true; for truth is always strange; Stranger than fiction".
Mark Twain appropriated it from Lord Byron when he said "Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't." (Following the Equator (1897), ch. 15)
