The Arts and the Mass Media is an essay by British art critic/curator Lawrence Alloway published in 1958 .
The essay launched the concept of Pop art, although the term Alloway used was "popular mass culture" Nevertheless, Alloway was one of the leading critics to defend the inclusion of the imagery found in mass culture in fine art.
The essay first appeared in the February 1958 issue of Architectural Design & Construction.
