The Lives of Animals (1999) is a collection of essays organized around the question of animal rights. The centerpiece of the collection is a novella entitled "The Lives of Animals" by the South African novelist, J. M. Coetzee, recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature. The collection features an introduction by Amy Gutmann, and following Coetzee’s contribution are reflections on his ideas by Marjorie Garber, Peter Singer, Wendy Doniger, and Barbara Smuts. The collection was published by Princeton University Press as part of its Human Values series.
