The three ages is a traditional schematic division of European history into classical civilization, the Middle Ages and Modern Civilization.
In his book Ancient Society (1877), Lewis H. Morgan developed his theory of the three stages of human progress, i.e., from Savagery through Barbarism to Civilization. Friedrich Engels based his Origin of the Family on this book.
