"Time Smoking a Picture"[1][2] William Hogarth.
The print depicts Father Time sitting on a fragment of statuary in front of a canvas on an easel. His scythe pierces the canvas. Next to the painting is a pot of varnish.
The print ridicules the practise, widespread in the eighteenth century, of artificial ageing of paintings with a yellowed varnish and smoke.
The print is a painting within an engraving and breaks the fourth wall in the sense that the smoke coming out of the mouth of Father Time, becomes clouds in the landscape painting on the easel.
