Je had je gewoon (over de tweets van Annabel Nanninga[1]) vergist Ramsey. Je had er de satire niet in gezien. Geef dat dan ook gewoon toe. Het zou je sieren. Onder andere de uitspraak "Mein Kampf en de zin die je krijgt om na zes pagina's joden uit te moorden", da's een citaat van Hans Teeuwen gebracht op het festival het Vrije Woord in de Balie, Amsterdam.
Ik wil hier graag nog een beetje cynisch (ach cynisch, eigenlijk ben ik er gewoon triest over) aan toevoegen dat de Nederlandse linkerpolitieke zijde Baudet aan zichzelf te danken heeft. Had Pim Fortuyn nog geleefd, Baudet was niet aan de bak gekomen en Wilders evenmin.

I started working on the realism in the visual arts and realism in literature pages after reading an 1960 essay by W. F. Hermans entitled antipathetic fictional characters (Dutch title: 'Antipathieke romanpersonages'). The concept of realism in the arts is a very complex one. It differs from field to field. Generally, these differences can be divided in issues of content and issues of style. Realism in the visual arts can refer the way a subject is depicted (life-like as opposed to fantastical) or to the choice of subject matter (everyday life as opposed to mythology). In literature it can refer to verisimilitude or to a 19th century European movement centered in France.
The introduction of realism in fiction and art parallels the development of modernism.
The main problem with realism is its link with reality. Reality often supersedes fiction as far as incredulity concerns. An audience may object to fiction claiming it is not 'realistic'. But reality is often more unbelievable than fiction. If somebody would have made a film speculating on the Holocaust, nobody would have thought that it was 'realistic'. Open any newspaper on any given day and you will read stories nobody would believe in a fictional story. [Apr 2006]

RIP Agnès Varda (1928 – 2019)
Agnès Varda was a Belgian-born French film director.
Film historians have cited Varda's work as central to the development of the French New Wave; her employment of location shooting and non-professional actors were unconventional in the context of 1950s French cinema.
Her films were popular among critics and other directors, giving her the status of a cult director.
This is perhaps a good time to rid the world of a misconception. Agnès Varda made a film about the black panthers, only one. That film was Black Panthers (1968), a color film which can be viewed in its entirety at Archive.org[8].

My two cents: in the short run it will be a disadvantage to the end-user (many films will be removed from YouTube by its managers).
Advantage will be had by the copyright holders, especially the smaller ones. This will lead to everyone being protected and paid.
Ik heb er eens over nagedacht.
Op de korte termijn kan die maatregel (de 'Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market') een nadeel betekenen voor de eindgebruiker omdat bepaalde inhoud tijdelijk onbeschikbaar zal zijn op het internet omdat de providers geen risico zullen nemen ivm door copyright beschermd materiaal. Ze zullen heel wat content verwijderen.
Op middellange termijn zal dit een voordeel betekenen voor copyrighthouders, vooral voor de kleinere. die zullen door een betere bescherming steeds meer een billijke vergoeding krijgen voor hun creatieve werk (waarschijnlijk door systemen die nu nog zullen moeten opgericht worden).
Jij, Johan Sanctorum, geeft aan dat je "een onafhankelijke blogger [bent] die leeft voor zijn pen" en je verzoekt mensen om je te belonen door "een gift overmaken". Je gebruikt daarvoor vaak foto's waarvan je het copyright niet hebt en ook vermoedelijk niet wil betalen. Je vindt het abnormaal dat bijvoorbeeld Karel Verhoeven voor zijn "fotogenieke kop [...] portretrecht kan eisen." Maar het gaat niet alleen om zijn portretrecht maar meer nog over de rechten van de copyrighthouder van de foto, de man of vrouw die de foto trok. Wil je die betalen? Of vind je dat je zomaar diens werk mag gebruiken?
Het internet als recente ontwikkeling heeft de copyrightregeling nu eenmaal op scherp gesteld en zal op termijn een goede zaak blijken voor creatievelingen.
Een voorbeeld.
Herinner u nog het schilderij "A Belgian Politician" van Luc Tuymans dat Jean-Marie Dedecker afbeeldde? Dat schilderij was gebaseerd op een foto van Katrijn Van Giel die in De Standaard verschenen was. In een rechtszaak die begin 2015 plaatsvond, werd Tuymans veroordeeld voor plagiaat. Tuymans wilde eerst in beroep gaan maar schikte uiteindelijk minnelijk in augustus 2015.
Iedereen wil betaald worden voor zijn inspanningen. Dat is fair. Dat is eerlijk.

RIP Larry Cohen (1941 - 2019)
Larry Cohen was an American film director and screenwriter.
He is best known as a B-movie auteur of horror and science-fiction films such as It's Alive (1974), God Told Me To (1976), Q (1982), Special Effects (1984) and The Stuff (1985), which were full of satirical social commentary.
Later in his career, he concentrated mainly on screenwriting, most successfully with the very interesting Phone Booth (2002).
RIP Scott Walker (1943 - 2019)
Scott Walker was an American-born British singer-songwriter, composer and record producer.
First active with the band The Walker Brothers, Walker evolved from sappy and catchy recordings with an edge of sadness ("Make It Easy on Yourself", 1965) and "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)", 1966) to more experimental work (Nite Flights, 1978).
He would continue this course of experimentation in his solo work, culminating with albums such as The Drift being scary and gentle at the same time.

RIP Andre Williams (1936 – 2019)
Andre Williams was an American musician best known for the hit records "Jail Bait," "Greasy Chicken," "Bacon Fat" (1956) and "Cadillac Jack" (1966). He was also the co-author of the R&B hit "Shake a Tail Feather".
Surprisingly, his track "Bacon Fat" can be found on the DJ Mix album How to Kill the DJ Part 2 (2004).

Okè voor jou was dat tussen 45-75, optimisten zoals Steven Pinker, Max Roser en Hans Rosling zullen betogen dat sindsdien de euvelen van de arme mensen stelselmatig meer verlicht werden.

Ik denk dat de ‘human condition’ een mengeling van egoïsme en altruïsme is, of zoals je wil liberalisme en communisme.

Daar moet toch onderzoek over bestaan?

Ik haalde die passage aan om te illustreren dat veel van wat wij van onszelf als redelijk beschouwen, gewoon ingevingen, passies, intuïties zijn die wij dan post hoc gaan rationaliseren.
Over mijn citaten over Wallerstein en Huntington kan ik kort zijn. Ik denk dat ze twee tegengestelde en concurrerende wereldbeelden representeren, Wallerstein historisch materialistisch, ergo eerder een economische interpretatie van de wereld, Huntington een culturele. Wat mij stoort aan het historisch materialisme is dat het de schijn van een teleologie heeft terwijl wat wij hier als mensen meemaken op aarde bijna allemaal puur contingentie.
- “Wallerstein beweert dat na het kapitalisme meerdere toekomsten mogelijk zijn, zie o.a. zijn Utopistics.”
Het zal mij benieuwen, wie weet komt er ook nooit een einde aan het kapitalisme.

Wat is beter? Ze worden allebei vaak geciteerd. Allicht hebben ze beiden een plaats in de historiografie van de wereld. Ik kan me moeilijk een geschiedschrijving van het tijdperk na de Koude Oorlog voorstellen waarin Huntington niet wordt vermeld.

Dali was het niet, Celine was het niet, Hamsun was het niet. Het lijkt mij superboeiend om hier een studie over te lezen. Ik snap ook wel wat je zegt hoor, toen ik pas in het onderwijs ging kwam ik van Microsoft. Ik sprak toen op een vrijdagavond na de lessen met een leerkracht die zei dat onze eerste opdracht als mens moest zijn de wereld te voeden. Dat was op een reactie op mijn opmerking dat ik niet van het socialisme en communisme hield omdat het zulk een lelijke kunst opleverde (kijk naar Soviet kunst). Ik was toen heel erg getroffen door zijn idealisme. Ik ben ook blij dat ik lesgeef, dat ik mijn portie altruïsme aan de wereld kan geven. Maar sinds dat ik ‘Dead Aid’ van Dambisa Moyo las, weet ik het niet zo goed meer wat we moeten doen aan de ongelijkheid in de wereld. Stel, je onteigent iedereen en je verdeelt alle geld dat er in de wereld is over de wereldbevolking. Iedereen zal op die manier een paar duizend euro krijgen. Maar gaat de ongelijkheid uit de wereld weg zijn?
- “Al die riedeltjes van (extreem) rechts over linkse indoctrinatie, cultuurmarxisme, het falen van links multiculturalisme, enz., het is één en al prietpraat.”
Deze opmerking, specifiek de woorden “riedeltjes”en “prietpraat” ervaar ik dan weer als neerbuigend.
Ik denk dat iedereen begaan is met een meer rechtvaardige wereld, alleen de manier waarop verschilt bij links en rechts, bij “progressief” en “conservatief”.

Hallo Mark Saey, jij bent een goeie jij , je zegt eerst dat je niet met mij wil praten op basis van intuïties, maar dan kom je zelf af met een boude niet bewezen door "ik denk" ingeleide intuïtie die stelt dat de meeste Nobelprijswinnaars "links georiënteerd" waren. Als ik je vraag hoe dat komt antwoordt je (ik had je beter gevraagd wie dat beweert) doodleuk dat ik me beter zou afvragen "hoe dat nog toeval zou kunnen zijn".
Klinkt als een cirkel.
Niet dat ik er niet voor opensta, dat de Nobelprijzen eerder naar links gingen. Wikipedia vemeldt er het volgende over "Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges was nominated several times but never won. Edwin Williamson, Borges's biographer, stated that the author's support of Argentine and Chilean right-wing military dictators may have been a factor. Borges' failure to win the Nobel Prize contrasts with awards to writers who openly supported left-wing dictatorships, including Joseph Stalin, in the case of Jean-Paul Sartre and Pablo Neruda. And Fidel Castro, in the case of Gabriel García Márquez. The academy's refusal to express support for Salman Rushdie in 1989, after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwā on his life led two Academy members to resign."
Dus het zou kunnen, dat samengaan van links en Nobelprijs. Er zijn binnen het Nobelprijzendomein immers nog enkele anders frappante correlaties: "Nobel Prizes have been awarded to over 900 individuals, of whom at least 20% were Jews, although the Jewish population comprises less than 0.2% of the world's population."
In verband met jouw opmerking: "Wat telt is niet vanuit welke hoek wat komt, wel wat juist is en wat niet." Daar ben ik het in principe mee eens maar ik weet dat het in de praktijk helaas niet kan. Er bestaat niet eens beschrijving zonder beïnvloeding van een waardenkader. "There is no view from nowhere" zoals Nagel in 1989 betoogde. x, jij beschrijft in die context Huntington als ideoloog en Wallerstein als wetenschapper. I beg to differ. Beiden zijn evenveel ideoloog als beschrijver. Samuel "clash of civilizations" is conservatief, Immanuel "capitalism will be replaced by a socialist economy" Wallerstein is marxist. Bovendien is dit nog eens zeer gezond ook, met elkaar conflicterende en aanvullende wereldbeelden. Progressieven en conservatieven, geen van beide heeft het moreel kompas in handen. Geen van beide kan morele superioriteit claimen.
Mark, David, zou het kunnen dat het Clash of Civilizations model van Samuel Huntington een concurrerende manier is om naar de wereld te kijken tov het Wallersteins model?

Zoals de docu 13th (2016) aantoont, is op een geven moment zelfs democraat Bill Clinton daar in meegegaan.
Kijk waar het de VS gebracht heeft. Ze hebben 5 procent van de wereldbevolking maar 25% van de wereldgevangenisbevolking. Yesterday 14/3/19 I watched Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles (2018) at CinemaZuid.
The film is interesting for its details on the 'making-of' of Land Without Bread (1933).
It reveals how Buñuel staged several scenes of his documentary: killing a donkey to be 'eaten' alive by bees and killing a goat to be eaten by the locals who would otherwise never eat meat.
While showing a dwarf in the style (or maybe it is that same dwarf) as depicted in fig. 44 of Las Jurdes : Étude de géographie humaine (1927), the book that was the inspiration for the film, the narrator says:
- "Dwarfs and morons are very common in the upper Hurdanos mountains. Their families employ them as goat herders if they’re not too dangerous. The terrible impoverishment of this race is due to the lack of hygiene, undernourishment and constant intermarriage. The smallest one of these creatures is 28 years old. Words cannot express the horror of their mirthless grins as they play a sort of hide and go seek."
Another scene shows a sickly and very thin girl lying in the street:

After watching the whole Land Without Bread film, I got the impression that Buñuel wanted to go for a lost tribe effect, since the opening title card reads:
- “The Hurdanos were unknown, even in Spain, until a road was built for the first time in 1922. Nowhere does man need to wage a more desperate fight against the hostile forces of nature.”
And a little bit further, when showing a baby covered in trinkets:
- "Though actually Christian, these trinkets are amazingly like the charms of African natives."
On the Hurdanos walking barefoot:
- "Shoes are a rare luxury and the roads are cruel to naked feet."
Graham Greene, in a review of the movie for Night and Day magazine, called it “an honest and hideous picture.”
And ugly it is.
Land Without Bread is reminiscent of Misère au Borinage (1934), both are political films in the tradition of the cult of ugliness which can be traced to The Potato Eaters (1885).

Ik lees op het moment 'Grays anatomie' van John Gray (niet het geneeskundeboek dus).
Het is een bijzonder boeiende verzameling essays over de recente politieke geschiedenis.
Het citaat over hoeden las ik in het essay "Alweer het einde van de geschiedenis?", Grays commentaar op Fukuyama's voorspelling dat het liberaal kapitalisme (en ergo ook de redelijkheid) de wereld had veroverd. Het citaat zélf is van de Engelse conservatieve filosoof Michael Oakeshott, uit zijn stuk "On Being Conservative" (1956).
Gray is een conservatieve filosoof die vaak pessimistisch genoemd wordt. Hij geloof niet dat morele vooruitgang bestaat en evenmin dat de rede de nieuwe heilsleer kan zijn, ervan uitgaande dat we voor hetzelfde geld maar een paar stappen verwijderd zijn van een nieuwe barbarij. Dat klinkt misschien onheilspellend maar ik vind het realistischer dan het ongefundeerde vooruitgangsdenken van zeg maar Maarten Boudry in de Lage Landen en zijn leermeester Steven Pinker in De Verenigde Staten.
Want wat de toekomst wordt, blijft koffiedik kijken. Vooral het vieren van het menselijk vernuft in de groene kwestie vind ik erg kortzichtig.
Enfin, ik ga een beetje verder lezen.
