De zaak Mila heeft dan toch eindelijk De Standaard bereikt. Of in het in DM staat, weet ik niet, ik heb vandaag de krant nog niet gelezen.
Waarover gaat het?
Mila is een zestienjarig meisje uit Lyon dat graag zingt en heel actief is op Instagram. Op een dag wijst ze een jongeman die opdringerige avances maakt af met de melding dat ze trouwens 'lesbisch' is en dus niet op jongens valt. Die jongeman neemt dat niet zo goed op. Hij scheldt haar uit voor alles wat vuil is en heeft het vanuit zijn religie ook erg moeilijk met haar seksuele voorkeur. Waarop Mila in een koleire schiet en in niet mis te verstane bewoordingen haar minachting uitdrukt voor alle religies en in het bijzonder de islam.
Het resultaat?
Zo'n tweehonderd haatberichten per minuut waaronder doodsbedreigingen. Haar privégegevens worden op het internet verspreid, zelfs het adres van haar school. Sindsdien leeft ze ondergedoken, onder politiebescherming, geen enkele school kan haar veiligheid garanderen.
Er volgen twee wettelijke vervolgingen, eentje tegen zij die haar dood willen, eentje tegen Mila zelf wegens het aanvallen van de "gewetensvrijheid", een codewoord in dit geval voor blasfemie, godslastering dus. Aanvankelijk verdedigde de minister van Justitie Nicole Belloubet (PS) de klacht tegen Mila nog. Later verontschuldigde ze zich en liet ze die vervolging vallen. Voor alle duidelijkheid, sinds 1791 bestaat in Frankrijk geen blasfemiewet meer.
In een felgesmaakt editoriaal van Charlie Hebdo wordt Mila vergeleken met een illustere voorganger en een illuster tijdsgenoot.
Ten eerste met François-Jean de la Barre, de jongeman die in de 18de eeuw gemarteld en levend verbrand wordt met een kopie van Voltaires 'Filosofisch woordenboek' op zijn borst gespijkerd. Zijn misdaad? Te weinig respect voor religie.
Ten tweede met Greta Thunberg.
Wat Greta en Mila verbindt is het feit dat ze beiden in de steek gelaten werden door laffe volwassenen. Laffe volwassenen die er niet in slaagden de planeet noch de vrijheid van meningsuiting te redden.
Het hoeft niet te verbazen dat islamapologeten als Othman El Hammouchi vandaag twitteren "JeSuisPasMila".

RIP Claire Bretécher (1940 - 2020)
Claire Bretécher was a French cartoonist, co-founder of L'Écho des savanes.
I used to buy issues of L'Écho des savanes in the late 1980s, a particularly fruitful time for comics, with highlights such as Tanino Liberatore, Enki Bilal, Wim T. Schippers, Jacques Tardi, Guido Crepax, Jean Giraud, Milo Manara, Georges Pichard and François Schuiten.
There was something particularly subversive about the whole scene in what you may call the pre-internet days. Shops all of over Europe catered to the tastes of the underground.
Only now that Claire Bretécher is dead, I discover her Agrippine character who was the heroin of nine albums. On the first self-titled album of 1988 Agrippine is shown reading the fictional Heidegger in the Congo (1988), a reference to Tintin in the Congo (1931).
I have not had the time to fully investigate but I suppose the link is that Heidegger was a Nazi and that Hergé's album in the Congo is now considered racist.
Anyway, I'm not showing you any pictures because I do not have the right to do so.

I saw the film it stems when it came out and never forgot the music, at one time buying the twelve inch. I sold my collection of records when I moved into my current apartment in 2015.
RIP Pierre 'eden, eden, eden' Guyotat (1940 - 2020)
Pierre Guyotat was a French writer. He is one of the last writers in the history of Western literature to have his book banned. The book was Eden, Eden, Eden and is a actually an enumeration of obscenities and atrocities in the tradition of Marquis de Sade's The 120 Days of Sodom (1785, 1904).
The backdrop is the Algerian war, which was not really an Algerian war but a French war. Or at least a French-Algerian war. Pierre Guyotat fought in that war as a teenager and was arrested on charges of inciting to desert and put in a hole in the ground for three months.

Ze drong aan op een charitable interpretation of Kant. Maar ik kan dat niet. Ik heb een hekel aan Immanuel Kant.
Ik dacht dat ze trouwens een dochter van Van Eekert was, ze lacht als hem, heet dezelfde mimiek, doceert eender en loopt net zoals hem de hele tijd rond in de klas. Lastig voor de nek.
Ze is wel, net zoals Van Eekert, heel systematisch.

Dyanne Thorne was an American actress best known for her film Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS.
I actually saw that film.
Ilsa conducts sadistic scientific experiments designed to demonstrate that women are more capable of enduring pain than men are, and therefore should be allowed to fight in the army. Ilsa is also portrayed as having a voracious sexual appetite for her male prisoners, whom she then castrates and kills.
It plays with the tropes of male anxiety of sexual inadequacy and the fear of castration.
Her character was very loosely based on that of Ilse Koch.

George Steiner was a Franco-American literary critic and essayist.
His anti-pornography essay "Night Words" (1965) first came to my attention in my capacity as pornosopher in the early 2000s.
Although I did not agree with him, his points were well-written and intellectually interesting.
Consider:
- "My true quarrel with the Olympia Reader and the genre it embodies is not that so much of the stuff should be boring and abjectly written. It is that these books leave a man less free, less himself, than they found him; that they leave language poorer, less endowed with a capacity for fresh discrimination and excitement. It is not a new freedom that they bring, but a new servitude. In the name of human privacy, enough!"
But then again, he also found the pearls and showed an appreciation for Diderot, a Crebillon fils, a Verlaine, a Swinburne, or an Apollinaire. Pornography as such is just nog very interesting, it is also interesting where it intersects with other genres or with other domains of interest.
I happened to read In Bluebeard's Castle (1971) during last summer. I had discovered the work when researching the notion of Western guilt and it features the much quoted dictum:
- "And it is true also that the very posture of self-indictment, of remorse in which much of educated Western sensibility now finds itself is again a culturally specific phenomenon. What other races have turned in penitence to those whom they once enslaved, what other civilizations have morally indicted the brilliance of their own past? The reflex of self-scrutiny in the name of ethical absolutes is, once more, a characteristically Western, post-Voltairian act."

This book had me laughing on the second page when Sloterdijk adds an imaginary plate to hang above the entrance to Plato‘s academy (the original one is “let no one destitute of geometry enter my doors.”), titled “let no man unwilling to engage in love affairs with other visitors enter my doors,” thereby filling the world with an embodied philosophy, one which does not deny Eros.

Het voordeel van het allemaal zelf te organiseren, is dat de maatschappij niet belast wordt met een maatschappelijk debat en dat dokters niet verplicht worden aan hun Hippocratische eed te verzaken.

Andy Gill was a British musician famous for his work with Gang of Four.
A couple of these compositions are of note:
"I Love A Man In A Uniform" (1982) which is featured on Various - 80's Underground Clubbing (2004) and "Damaged Goods" (1978) wich is featured on How to Kill the DJ part 2.
The opening sequence of the track "What We All Want" (1981) is reminiscent of "Play That Funky Music (1976)."
"The great Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges argues convincingly in an essay reprinted in The Total Library (published in the US as Selected Non-Fictions) that Carlyle's views foreshadowed Nazism."[5]

Yesterday, as I was reading up on the recently deceased Monique van Vooren, I searched for Fearless Frank (1967) on YouTube and stumbled upon Fearless Frank, or Tit-bits from the Life of an Adventurer (1978), a BBC television film directed by Colin Bucksey, an adaptation of Frank Harris's autobiography My Life and Loves (1922-27) starring Leonard Rossiter as Frank.
There is one scene (56:29) at the Cafe Royal with Ernest Dowson, Oscar Wilde, Bernard Shaw, Lord Alfred Douglas and Whistler.
And at 35:20 one hears Carlyle say to Frank:
"I did not consummate my marriage Frank ... my poor Jane died a virgin."
A quick search finds that the phrase "Jane Welsh Carlyle died a virgin" is featured in David Markson's 'novel' The Last Novel.
This is a very enjoyable play.

Monique van Vooren (1927 – 2020) was a Belgian-born American actress and dancer, perhaps best-known for her part in Andy Warhol's Frankenstein (1973), also known as Flesh for Frankenstein.
In that film she is baroness Frankenstein, wife and sister of baron Frankenstein (Udo Kier).
The film's pretty awful but the gore is marked by high production values.
In the film, you can spot the Van Vooren nude in a duo with Joe Dallesandro.

This is an excerpt from G. E. Moore on beauty and the naturalistic fallacy.
- I may, however, state two general principles, closely connected with the results of this chapter, the recognition of which would seem to be of great importance for the investigation of what things are truly beautiful. The first of these is (1) a definition of beauty, of what is meant by saying that a thing is truly beautiful. The naturalistic fallacy has been quite as commonly committed with regard to beauty as with regard to good: its use has introduced as many errors into Aesthetics as into Ethics. It has been even more commonly supposed that the beautiful may be _defined_ as that which produces certain effects upon our feelings; and the conclusion which follows from this--namely, that judgments of taste are merely _subjective_--that precisely the same thing may, according to circumstances, be _both_ beautiful _and_ not beautiful--has very frequently been drawn. The conclusions of this chapter suggest a definition of beauty, which may partially explain and entirely remove the difficulties which have led to this error. It appears probable that the beautiful should be _defined_ as that of which the admiring contemplation is good in itself. That is to say: To assert that a thing is beautiful is to assert that the cognition of it is an essential element in one of the intrinsically valuable wholes we have been discussing; so that the question, whether it is _truly_ beautiful or not, depends upon the _objective_ question whether the whole in question is or is not truly good, and does not depend upon the question whether it would or would not excite particular feelings in particular persons. This definition has the double recommendation that it accounts both for the apparent connection between goodness and beauty and for the no less apparent difference between these two conceptions. It appears, at first sight, to be a strange coincidence, that there should be two _different_ objective predicates of value, ‘good’ and ‘beautiful,’ which are nevertheless so related to one another that whatever is beautiful is also good. But, if our definition be correct, the strangeness disappears; since it leaves only one _unanalysable_ predicate of value, namely ‘good,’ while ‘beautiful,’ though not identical with, is to be defined by reference to this, being thus, at the same time, different from and necessarily connected with it. In short, on this view, to say that a thing is beautiful is to say, not indeed that it is _itself_ good, but that it is a necessary element in something which is: to prove that a thing is truly beautiful is to prove that a whole, to which it bears a particular relation as a part, is truly good.
